In early 2012 the Sahel area in sub-Saharan Africa was facing shortage in food and millions of people were in risk of hunger. In my Bachelor´s thesis I´m investigating the coverage of the Sahel crisis of 2012 in two Finnish main media; the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat and the online news of Finnish broadcasting company Yle (http://yle.fi/uutiset/). My data was collected between January and September in 2012 and it consisted fifteen different articles. My research method was critical discourse analysis through which I hoped to bring out the hidden structures of the texts and also to see what kind of so-called sahelian reality the writer was describing. Women, Empowerment, and Mobile Phones in the Developing World

This chapter surveys and analyzes recent literature on mobile communication to examine its relationship to gender and development, more specifically how women in developing countries use and are impacted by mobile phones. Focusing on issues of power, agency, and social status, the chapter reviews how mobile telephony has been found to be implicated in patriarchal bargaining in different societies, how privacy and control are enabled through it, what benefits have been shown to accrue to women using mobile phones, and what barriers, limitations, and disadvantages of mobile use exist for women and why. In recent decades, the theory of non-places has gained a wide recognition and esteem in the global journals. It is originally oriented to discuss the negative effects of postmodernism or hyper-mobilities in the real world. It was coined by French ethnologist Marc Auge. Although illustrative and pungent, Auge's argument should be seriously revisited. To what an extent a place can be called a non-place?, what are the specific condition for the non-places production? Auge explains his model respecting to three indicators, identity, conflict and tradition.
